Find the right companion device — without the noise.

There are more options than ever, and most of the information available is marketing. This page helps you narrow things down based on what actually matters: who it's for, what you're hoping for, and what won't work.

Step 1
What are you hoping for?

Different devices are good at different things. Knowing your primary goal helps rule out most of the noise.

Companionship & conversation
A presence that talks, listens, or engages throughout the day. Reduces silence and loneliness.
Comfort & soothing presence
Something warm, tactile, calming. Not about conversation — about feeling less alone.
Caregiver peace of mind
Check-ins, activity updates, routine support. Helps the caregiver as much as the elder.
Cognitive engagement
Games, memory prompts, trivia, structured activities. Keeps the mind active.
Step 2
Where will this be used?

Environment shapes everything — what's practical, what's allowed, and who's nearby to help if something goes wrong.

At home, living independently — most options work, but setup and ongoing support fall on family or the user.
At home with caregiver present — more options available, including devices that need occasional reset or charging help.
Assisted living or memory care — durability, infection control, and staff buy-in matter. Some devices aren't practical in shared settings.
Step 3
Any dealbreakers?

These filters eliminate quickly. If any of these matter, they should drive your shortlist.

No subscriptions
Many devices require $20–$50/month to function. Some don't.
No always-on mic or camera
Privacy-minimal options exist, but they trade off conversational ability.
Unreliable Wi-Fi
Most companions need a connection. A few work offline or degrade gracefully.
Must be screen-free
Some people don't want or can't use screens. Physical companions and voice-only options exist.
